About Odyssey Art Glass - Tom Michael, Artist
Tom Michael, born February 14, 1949, in Alpena, Michigan - USA
My introduction to fine art glass began in 1975 with the purchase of my first pieces of Steuben gold aurene and G. Argy-Rousseau pate de verre. Art glass became a fascination and before long I opened an antique shop and stained glass studio in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.
The fascination continued and I soon undertook the repair of Tiffany and Tiffany-type lamps and windows for patrons around Michigan. I also bought and sold fine American and European art glass. Many superlative pieces of the Art Nouveau-era passed through my hands and I to care to study them all. Works by Tiffany, Steuben, Quezal, Lalique, Walter, Rousseau, Galle, and Loetz left an indelible impression on me, providing inspirations for future artistic endeavor. Still engaged as a successful real estate broker/owner, I built my present studio in 2004, and began blowing art glass solo. Not surprisingly, my efforts centered on techniques and designs peculiar to the Art Nouveau era of decorated, iridescent art glass. Each piece of Odyssey Art Glass is individually hand-blown and hand- crafted using only the finest and most expensive clear and colored glass available.
In July of 2009 I discovered my unique batch ingrediants for a heartbreakingly beautiful iridescent / luminescent finish, 'Egyptian Luster', that is unlike anything I have run across, past or present.
